o local

"Where land is privately owned one sign of a poorly balanced economy is the concentration of land ownership in the hands of a very small number of people (...) the control of jobs and business opportunities in a few hands (...) another sign of a poor balanced economy is a taxation system that presses heaviest on those least able to pay"

Do controlo da informação:

"A community rates low on an information scale when the press radio and other channels of communication are controlled by only a few people and when citizens have to accept what they are told (...) books and newspapers and the radio are efficiently controled the people will read and accept exactly what the few in control want them to (...) it's also possible for newspappers and other forms of communication to be controled by private interests [exemplo dado ? "advertisement"...] (...) in communities of this kind of despotism stands a good chance"

The current Web is not private or censorship-free. It lacks a memory, a way to preserve our culture’s digital record through time. The Decentralized Web aims to make the Web open, secure and free of censorship by distributing data, processing, and hosting across millions of computers around the world, with no centralized control.

in Real Nós

Chamam-lhes "nichos".

With fewer journalists working today, reporters are becoming increasingly concentrated in coastal cities, investigative journalism and local statehouse reporting is declining, and the ratio of journalists to public relations specialists is widening. (…) As national and local newspapers try to cut their way out of trouble by slashing editorial budgets and shedding staff, journalistic quality is becoming a casualty.
http://www.ospositivos.com/2016/11/face-it.html

Da relevância:

Scale matters. Some smaller and local newsrooms feel left out
http://www.ospositivos.com/2016/11/we-call-them-frenemy.html

Do impacto e proximidade:

For many of us, news about our friends is more important than reporting of politics or foreign conflicts that journalists have long used as their definition of "news."
http://www.ospositivos.com/2016/11/industria-da-imprensa-impressa.html

You are working for a much smaller audience, but it’s focused and you can really gain some notoriety locally. And there’s nothing like upsetting locals. (…) The readers are more connected to local work.
http://www.ospositivos.com/2016/10/ted-rall-vs-matt-bors.html

Da sustentabilidade:

Small city newspapers (dailies and weeklies) aren’t complaining. Why not? Because they’re not in the kind of trouble big city papers are in. They still get sufficient revenue from advertising, display and classified: local businesses have no place else to advertise.
http://www.ospositivos.com/2016/11/industria-da-imprensa-impressa.html

In many ways, local reporters are well ahead of the national (...) The hand-wringing taking place in the national media over how journalism failed to understand what was happening doesn’t quite fit in this part of the country. Local journalists were well aware of Trump’s deep appeal in their communities and had been reporting it for months leading up to Trump’s victory.

No one is going to be happy about media coverage
People want to talk to people who think like them, and we’re journalists and we don’t think like anyone.
To be a local journalist after the 2016 election means reminding readers and viewers that the local press is not the national media but they nonetheless share the same responsibility to report the news (...) the challenge for local media is that no matter how hard journalists try to be fair and impartial and do the right thing for the community there is "always that media thing right behind you even if the story was totally legitimate."

It is an odd paradox in a small community: people shop with their local TV reporters and send their kids to school with the children of the editors of their hometown newspaper. They know their local journalists not simply as a byline but as the reporter who sits in the fourth row from the front on the right side of the church every Sunday. They don’t always see them as "the media." The media are CNN and The New York Times and the Huffington Post.

Local journalists, like their national counterparts, are sure to face more criticism as Trump prepares to take office. There are two things at play: one is what role journalists will have under a president who has been outwardly hostile of the watchdogs of government, and the other is to what extent people will be willing to listen if the journalism doesn’t confirm previously held beliefs. In other words, how will any journalist deliver credible news under a model in which people doesn’t necessarily want information but rather something else?

Pope, the reporter at the ABC 57 station in South Bend, says when he covered a Trump rally in Indiana earlier this year he saw Confederate flags, signs telling people to go back to Mexico and references to Adolf Hitler. They were things he had "never seen before with my own eyes, things that made me drop my jaw." (...) He decided the best way to convey what he was seeing was to be upfront with viewers that it was abnormal. "I didn’t editorialize," he says. "What I didn’t do was treat this as a normal thing, just something we did. I made sure to stress that we haven’t seen South Bend like this. We saw a city divided." (...) Pope says the real challenge is trying not to normalize the behavior but also to be fair.
in "Trump territory, local press tries to distance itself from national media" 21 nov 2016

Outro excerto:

Just as Twitter rode Sand Hill Road’s wave of excitement over social media companies, it appears to have failed to pivot the next big thing: messaging services. (…) The difference between Facebook and Twitter reflects the shift from social media to messaging, which is just the latest in a series of shifts in Silicon Valley. Messaging services are now eclipsing social media companies in terms of user numbers. (…) The move to messaging, a platform that can be monetized, and away from the more-nebulous category of social media is perhaps part of a movement away from quixotic ideas about growth, and a renewed focus on business fundamentals and a path to profitability.
in "The Big Difference Between Facebook and Twitter" 3 nov 2016

Facebook could use its enormous influence to shift the spotlight away from the spectacle of national news and onto local issues that people can see and connect with more directly. (…) "If you want to be free of fake news, you’ve got to focus on things that are observable (...) So there’s nothing that does that like going into your community." (…) Promoting more local content would not only give people a more direct way to participate in issues that affect them where they live, but a more immediate way to verify what’s actually going on.
in "Facebook Shouldn’t Bother Policing Fake News—It Should Go Local Instead" 18 nov 2016

unconventional webcomics have now newly emerged as a new leader in the local entertainment business (…) local broadcasting companies are increasingly eyeing those webcomic artists with their unique and trendy ideas
http://www.ospositivos.com/2016/09/a-industria-dos-webcomics.html

The discussion seeks to relate the relevance of punk musical performance and the importance of local music scenes
http://www.ospositivos.com/2016/10/punk-gone-digital.html

Voltando, arranhando.

The internet that helped elect Barack Obama in 2008 and was used during Arab spring in 2011 is different from the internet that led to Brexit and the election of Donald Trump.

Destaques nossos.

Hossein Derakhshan was imprisoned in Tehran for six years for what he was publishing on his blog. When he was freed in 2014, he realized the internet had changed drastically. Instead of being the web of the mid-aughts, the blogs and independent platforms connected by hyperlinks that he had left behind were replaced with a select handful of barely connected, gated social networks like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
in "This Is How Facebook Is Radicalizing You" 16 nov 2016

E consequência desses silos?

[Facebook’s News Feed] silences the minorities because if you don’t have a popular opinion or popular post, that opinion won’t even be seen by your own friends
in "This Is How Facebook Is Radicalizing You" 16 nov 2016

If you want to fully understand Twitter’s abuse problem, a good place to start is at Google (...) Like Twitter, Blogger had grown quickly as a broadcast tool, becoming home to a wide spectrum of voices, no small number of which were loud and obnoxious and objectionable. (…) And while Blogger’s free speech problems were novel, small-scale, and often abstract, Twitter’s follower model and public reply system proved thornier to manage. There’s a big difference between people saying hurtful things on the easily moderated comment section of a hard-to-find blog and people showing up in your mentions spewing hate speech.
in "A Honeypot For Assholes": Inside Twitter’s 10-Year Failure To Stop Harassment" 11 agosto 2016

Inocente? Nem por isso.

A meme like the Ice Bucket Challenge was the first big indication that Facebook had drastically changed the structure of popular culture (…) memes have appeal and the most viral ones go mainstream [e as] Facebook pages get bigger.

Smyth expects to take advantage of the fact that venture capital companies, having bought up newspapers to squeeze out profits, will be looking to unload them cheaply in the future.
