"pay close attention to the zeitgeist"

"Destroy All Comics" (-e como não gostar do título?- era um) zine (published by Slave Labor Graphics) (que foi) influential the way some blogs or twitters are influential now—flaring up as a node in a network for a year or two, then fading and dispersing. (...) Destroy All Comics represented a weird new mix of punk DIY and cartooning classicism

Destaques nossos. Punk e classicismo? Zine e blog equiparados? Sacrebleu!

This kind of “reality based" historical or anthropological viewpoint felt like a new landscape for comics in the 1990s: an alternative to superhero continuity checklists, fandom’s specialist crate-digging, and to the sex and goofs of the underground. (The ’90s also saw a sort of first blip of “cyber" and “electro" comics that started playing with computers as subject and metaphor and tool. It seemed “prog" at the time, but looking back there was some interesting stuff happening. Someone should put together a book of that kind of material? It was reacting to the graphics of computer games at the time, which were already threatening to change the face of comics forever…)

* oh, we're free... nevermind: u guys have it all, OS POSITIVOS: o vosso agregador de conteúdos curados para uma geração de digi-punx.

E entramos no digitalis. Internet?

The access the internet affords us to archival material, independent journalism, social organizing, etc. should be a wonderful thing.

Sobre o "drawing digitally", sabemos que o Katchor é "unsentimental about paper and ink": "paper factories are horrible places and ink is carcinogenic" -

Because he draws for reproduction, having a physical artifact is not the point for him. He described having a lot of drawings on paper, but not actually doing anything with them.
in "The New York Comics Symposium: Ben Katchor Interviewed By Gil Roth" 5 abril 2013

his belief in comics as a popular art form that should be made widely available
in "The New York Comics Symposium: Ben Katchor Interviewed By Gil Roth" 5 abril 2013

Ainda que ressalvando as dificuldades habituais -

whether online or in print, (...) books can be cost-prohibitive and that internet access is not universal
in "The New York Comics Symposium: Ben Katchor Interviewed By Gil Roth" 5 abril 2013

Katchor reflected on the heyday of free newspapers, which he considered to be his “ideal venue" (...) which was essentially “cheap and disposable."
in "The New York Comics Symposium: Ben Katchor Interviewed By Gil Roth" 5 abril 2013

Mas, e se o mood está definido, a música é soft, as velas a fazer o seu efeito, enought foreplay, let's get it on. Papel, digital, o que te importa? Importa-te onde o segundo afecta as materialidades do primeiro. Ou, como resume o Katchor:

As long as we have physical bodies, the depiction of the physical world will interest me. The smartphone lives in the physical world, in the lint filled-pocket of an unemployed office worker who needs to find a restroom.

So far so good: no papel (funny!) parece-nos prático.

Estes serviços definem a agenda do dia.

NPR rides Facebook wave to traffic record

Why did it perform so well? Building the audience ahead of time was surely one major factor in contributing to the page’s performance. (...) But this isn’t the whole story. Looking into the analytics, according to Chartbeat data and confirmed by NPR, Facebook was the major driver of traffic for the page, though it also did well on search. On the night of the debate alone, Facebook sent over 2 million page views to the page.

desktop is soooo dead.
As far as the NPR analytics team can tell, he said, Facebook traffic did not come from any particular post going viral. Nor did they spend money promoting Facebook posts for the first debate. About half of Facebook traffic came from posts on the 90 NPR pages that shared it, and half came from organic sharing by readers.

Ultimately, the fact that Facebook traffic spiked at the end of the debate wasn’t based on a decision made by NPR, or some viral fluke, but rather determined by Facebook’s algorithm. As publisher, NPR had no control over how many people saw its post, and how or why the page did so well on Facebook remains something of a mystery. (...) Facebook had a lot to do with that — its algorithm favoring one link or another affects the fate of publishers.

Facebook -- which accounts for as much as 75% of the traffic to popular websites -- tweaked its algorithm to downrank those same publishers, who had been engaged in an arms-race to dominate Facebook users' feeds through techniques intended to gain high rank in Facebook's secret scoring system.

Starved for the traffic that keeps their businesses viable, publishers have turned to brokers who pay celebrities to post their stories in their personal feeds, working their way back into Facebook users' fields of attention.

The practice of paying celebs to post stories and ads was already established as a kind of arbitrage services, since celebs charged less for reposting services than Facebook charged to advertise to the same users. With the Facebook crackdown on "professional content," these payola services are now the only game in town, and they're growing like crazy.

in "Facebook's crackdown on publishers feeds has sites paying celebs to repost" 22 outubro 2016 sobre o original em "Facebook-thirsty publishers turn to celebrities to worm into the news feed" 21 outubro 2016

Citação na citação:

It’s the latest example of publishers finding a distribution channel for their content, then having to compete with upstarts who make content specifically for that channel.

the smartphone (...) in the lint filled-pocket of an unemployed office worker who needs to find a restroom

Make choices.
